Rosa L. Parks, civil rights activist and inspiration for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, was born in Tuskegee, AL, on this date February 4, 1913. Her refusal to give up her seat on a bus led to the historical year-long boycott of the bus system.

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’ll be spotlighting incredible Black female pioneers and entrepreneurs, from innovators and inventors to artists and chefs. Today we’re sharing the story of Edna Lewis, a trailblazing chef and cookbook author who not only raised the bar for the food industry as a whole, but also epitomized the rich history of Southern cooking.

Born in 1916 in Freetown, Virginia, a town founded by emancipated slaves, Edna Lewis grew up learning how to raise, harvest, forage, season, and cook fresh food alongside her family, which ultimately led her down the road to becoming a world-renowned chef in the 1940s. She opened Café Nicholson in New York City with business partner, John Nicholson, and served as the head chef. At this celebrity hotspot, she created some of her favorite and famous Southern dishes, including herbed chicken, biscuits, and soufflé. Lewis also created history-making cookbooks—"The Taste of Country Cooking" published in 1976 was one of her most popular and among the first nationally-recognized cookbooks by an African American woman. Her legacy lives on through her award-winning work, which continues to illustrate her Black heritage, Southern cultural traditions, and farm-to-table recipes. 📷: John T. Hill

Huge congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris for their historic win! There were many firsts in this election including:

• According to Bloomberg, at least 161 million Americans voted in the 2020 election, the largest number of voters in a U.S. presidential election in history.

• Joe Biden breaks Obama's record for most votes ever cast for a U.S. presidential candidate

• Harris will be the first woman, the first Black person, the first Indian American and the first Asian American to hold the office. She will also be the first graduate of a historically Black college and first member of a Black sorority to do so.

• Biden's German shepherd, Major, will also make history as the first rescue dog to live at The White House.
